I read a long time ago that our nerves have a bandwidth for passing electrical signals from our senses, which means one way of "alleviating" pain is to generate other senses so that the nerves cannot fully pass the pain signal to the brain. I was having some (minor but annoying) lower back pain the other day, and decided to test the theory with the help of the massager being applied around the lower back. Guess what? Instantly I couldn't feel the lower back pain any more. Even after I turned the massager off after a few minutes, I sensed no lower back pain any more.
