Eventually, I realized that I had to spread my arms wide to let the rope drop into a wider space, and then pull my arms together. The first time I tightened the fence, the tool slipped because I didn't put enough tension on the handles before chaining them together. The second I tightened the wire, a few feet away, the tool remained in place, allowing for quick and easy tightening of the fence joint.
