This was so much fun for my 7 year old who used his gift money to buy it. He has loved rocks ever since a field trip last year to a local rock museum. The included rock book is very fun for him to read through and compare to the rocks he found. Excavating for rocks was a blast for him. Even his 10 year old brother was excited to help him dig. We found the promised number of rocks but had a duplicate of one and was therefore missing one of the others. He was only mildly disappointed but still was very happy with his purchase. I would recommend doing this activity outside if possible as it does make quite a mess. The “dirt” is made out of a chalk like substance so is easy to dig through with the included tools. And if it's too hard, you simply add a little water which will soften it up. Highly recommended!

This was discounted, knowing my little guy loves chemistry, rocks and experiments, this was a perfect gift to let out his creativeness for building his curiosity and foundation for the love of science, nature and the like. He loved this kit! Right away he dug out the rocks! Then we grew the crystals which turned out so beautiful teaching patience in this process checking growth each day. After the 7th day he as well as I was so impressed with the beauty of the crystal. I would of loved to upload the photo I wasn't able to access the location. It grew approximately 3.5" and was a greenish tint. We still have 2 or more experiments left, so well worth the money to make my 6 yr old grandson entertained and excited! I highly recommend for children who are curious and get excited about digging for rocks, gems, treasure and think they are Jr. Scientists! Looking forward to making the volcano etc.

This was an awesome purchase. My daughter loves rocks and gemstones and this was right in her wheel house. There are several stones encased in this chunk of "dirt". Tools provided are decent quality and my 6 year-old was able to do most of the work. It does take a bit to get some of the stones free, but thats part of the fun, slowly revealing a hidden treasure. Adult help can be needed from time to time but again, it was part of the fun to do this together. After all the stones are dug up, you still have a good collection of stones to look at and the included book tells you more about the treasures you uncovered. Nothing bad to say about this wholesome, family friendly and educational activity!

She was so excited for the gems and needed minimal supervision and assistance to dig them out. It was a good task in persistence for her - she came back to it maybe 3 or 4 times over the course of the afternoon. It's hard to work to dig them all out! I will say we had to use some water to soften ours, which worked well but made it extra messy. We did this outside. If you don't have access to outdoor space, you might think twice as it would've been too messy for my taste for an inside toy.Gems are great. Decent size (could be a chocking hazard for younger kids so consider your overall household) and the guidebook is fun. Would buy or gift again!

Very glad we got it all my kids were happy and were able to "discover" some hidden treasure of their own. The gemstone variety was fantastic and the size and quality was above our expectations.Of course don't expect to be pulling out quarter sized gemstones, The sizes ranged from good sized peas upwards to good sized marbles. And there were no duplicates which surprised me. The largest were a quartz/amethyst piece and a pyrite nugget. The smallest would've been pieces of Jasper and Malachite - however they were all beautiful and very definitive looking. Once we rinsed them off with water, the kids (ages 4-10) could easily identify them from the pictures in the instruction booklet. Fun gift for all.
