When it encounters an additional piece of plastic sealing the cap to the keeper ring around the neck of a plastic bottle, it keeps on working until all the little fragments of plastic connecting the cap to the retainer ring are broken, no matter how many there are. Just place it on the jar and press the button. Once the jar is popped opened, press the button to release the opener. Do not try opening a coke bottle. That's how I broke the first one I had.
